WE MUST PRESERVE INDEPENDENT LIVING

Disabled people are facing an unprecedented attack on our living standards and way of life. We are: -

·        Facing drastic reductions in care packages as a result of local government cut backs, a 20% cut is not uncommon;

·        Being bullied by the agents of ATOS carrying out work capability assessments resulting in benefits being stopped;

·        Being bullied by the agents of Access to Work who are questioning every agreement on support to keep us in employment;

·        Worrying about the implications of the closure of the Independent Living Fund which will leave us at the mercy of local authorities;

·        Facing the abolition of Disability Living Allowance and its replacement with Personal Independence Payment which many of us will not be eligible for.

Independent living, that is being able to meet our support needs in the way we choose so that we can be equal citizens in society, is in crisis! Everything we have gained as a movement over the last 30 years is now being put in jeopardy. If we cannot get our support needs met then we will become institutionalised in our own homes living in intolerable conditions and unable to take part in community life. We will be forced to be dependent on family, friends and volunteers who we have no control over. Just like the old days.

We cannot allow this to happen! NCIL is actively campaigning against these draconian public expenditure cuts joining with other sections of our society who are also opposed.

We are working with Disabled People Against the Cuts http://disabilitymessageboard.blogspot.com/2010/10/disabled-people-against-cuts-dpac.html . We are working with UKDPC and other disability groups on national action including a demonstration and lobby of Parliament on the Welfare Reform Bill in May. Details to be announced in the next couple of weeks.

Our immediate priority is the march on 26th March in |London called by the TUC. We urge all our members to take part on what will probably be the largest demonstration the country has ever seen. There will be a disabled people’s sections. More details willbe posted as they become available.

Campaigning for the rights and equality of disabled people.

This website is designed to be a resource on independent living, direct payments and personal budgets for disabled people and others working in the field who may find it useful.

NCIL is a National support, advice and consultancy organisation that aims to enable disabled people to be equal citizens with choice, control, rights and full economic, social and cultural lives.

We believe in the "social model of disability", which means when we talk about "disabled" people, we mean how society disables us by the way that it treats and excludes us whatever our impairment. We focus on how and where society fails to include disabled people by "disabling" attitudes and barriers and aim to reduce and remove those barriers.

We are a not-for-profit, membership organisation, run and controlled by disabled people.
