Current Campaigns and Consultation Responses
Our campaigns are not limited to consultation responses as listed here. Instead, we seek to influence and lobby the government on Independent Living and the role of ULOs through various channels - almost on a weekly basis. For example, we have achieved – as a result of our joint appearance at a parliamentary Select Committee with others - that those disabled people who are eligible can claim the housing need for a live-in carer. The essential role of ULOs in promoting & facilitating people’s choices in health and social care – and the great impact such involvement can have even on one’s health outcomes – is increasingly recognised by the Department of Health; ULOs still have to make the (economic) case locally towards their local authorities. About the enormous cuts to social services provision, the effective closure of the ILF and the recently proposed reforms to the DLA we are much less confident. However, we will not stop voicing our anger and disappointment given that these benefits have ensured that support for those concerned has been demand-led (cutting bureaucratic waste) and that previous shortfalls in local government funding have not been as tough as they would otherwise have been.
The responses to consultations listed below provide a comprehensive overview of where NCIL stands in relation to the latest reforms proposed by the government across health and social care, in particular with regards to ULOs, personalisation and “putting purchasing power into people’s hands”.
We commonly obtain feedback from our members and others (both individuals and organisations) in the following ways:
1. Informing about new policies and proposed government reforms in Independently and e-bulletin
2. Gathering one-to-one feedback in follow-up communications, in person, by email and on the phone
3. Collating evidence and views from callers of our daily helpline
4. Collating evidence from our online forum / policy forum (in which people can also feed issues which have not previously been flagged up).
5. Delivering particular networking and consultation events, eg on the UN Convention, NHS Greater Choices, etc..
6. NCIL seeks and welcomes debate on all issues, and what people feed back to us strengthens our insights and credibility - all feedback channels are constantly reviewed and their accessibility improved
7. Where there have been conflicting views expressed by our members, we will reflect this in our responses and lobbying activities.
