Equality, Diversity & Human Rights

Equality, diversity and human rights are key to the values and the role of ULOs. As we know, historically, disabled people have had their rights to dignity, fairness and social participation undermined by law and by the way society is organised. There is much still to be fought for before disabled people have their diversity recognised by service providers and have equality of opportunity throughout society.

If you work for a ULO, how consciously do you incorporate equality, diversity or human rights into your work? Do you use human rights as a campaigning tool? Have you advocated for culturally appropriate support for your users? Do your Trustees reflect the diversity of your local community?

Working with Excluded Communities It is very easy for organisations to become self centred and to consider that the only issue of importance is the one that is in front of you. Whilst it is clearly important to stay focussed, it is in our opinion critical that ULOs are open to the wider issues around them and actively seek to develop partnership with groups that face similar, but we would argue not competitive, challenges.
